11.1 scope of manual - fire engineering requirements of buildings

The scope of fire design in the manual refers to the Fire Rating requirements of floor systems in buildings. As such it makes reference to the acceptable solutions C/AS1 “Fire Safety” prepared by the Building Industry Authority as a way to satisfy the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code, for fire safety i Buildings. The scope of discussions covered in this manual however, is limited and should not replace the advice and designed prepared by fire engineering consultants familiar with preparing fire design for buildings.
The discussions here, is offered merely to provide possible directions for structural consultants to head, in consultation with their associated fire consultants on specific projects.

In particular comments include aspects where:

a)   Buildings are referred to generally and as such are conceptual only. All actual buildings are case specific and require individual assessment in a complete fire design, which lies outside the scope of this document.

b)    This manual refers to fire ratings and minimum fire resistance required for tray flooring only, to the exclusion of all other aspects of fire safety contained in the acceptable solutions. For actual buildings, all aspects of fire safety are inter-related and are required to be addressed as an integral design.
