11.4 fire rating of floors

The acceptable solution requires that all floors be fire separations, except when that floor is either an ‘intermediate floor’ within a firecell or the lowest floor above an unoccupied sub-floor space. Where floors are fire serrations, then fire rating is required only on the underside and the rating is that which applies to the firecell directly below the floor.
An ‘Intermediate’ floor is an upper floor within a firecell which is permitted not to be fire separated from the floor below.

Where the floor is the lowest floor above an unoccupied space, then the requirement fire rating FRR is half the firecell ‘F” requirement. However, where fire separations and external walls enclose the sub floor space then no FRR is required for the floor. It must be stressed that the sub-floor space must be completely empty and that its use for storage or for housing machinery or heavy equipment is prohibited.
